Próximamente Festival: the stage at the Royal Flemish theater goes latino.

The Próximamente festival returns for a third edition at the KVS. For one week, the festival presents the very best in Latin American theater, dance and performance.

Futuro Ancestral. The Ancestral Future. This intriguing theme has been chosen by the team led by Gerardo Salinas, Argentinian programmer at the KVS theater in Brussels, as the guiding theme for this year's Proximamente festival.

It's this blend of past and future that will guide audiences through this year's program. Born in 2019, the Proximamente festival is gradually establishing itself as an essential part of the Brussels theater season, much to our delight.

Reflecting on the future by drawing on the wisdom of the past is what organizers Gerardo Salinas and Cecilia Kuska propose. The first event of the festival sets the tone with a discussion with Lukas Avendaño, a Mexican performance artist and anthropologist. Lukas identifies himself as Muxe, a third gender identity that has existed for centuries in certain communities in the Oaxaca region. Later in the week, the artist will present his latest work, Bardaje.

These questions about the place left to indigenous knowledge in a world shaped by colonialism are echoed in Argentine artist Tiziano Cruz's presentation of Soliloquio. In this one-man show, based on letters written to his mother during confinement, the artist revisits the death of his sister as a result of medical negligence, reflecting the discrimination endured by indigenous populations in an Argentine society that considers itself white. Through his personal story, Cruz interweaves the political and the intimate in an explosive visual creation.

In addition to its theatrical program, the Proximamente festival is also a fabulous laboratory of ideas. Most of the works presented are still in progress, and require audience feedback to evolve. Authors Leonor Courtoisie and Nicolas Puente will be sharing with us the progress of their latest literary creations. We are also intrigued by the performance of Andrea Bonilla, an Afro-Colombian dancer who will be presenting Ruido Blanco (White Noise), her examination of the stereotypes and expectations imposed on black women. The week will also be enlivened by several conferences, including one on the state of artistic creation in Latin America in 2024, and another on the possibilities for artistic collaboration between Europe and Latin America.

The festival aims to build a creative bridge between the Old Continent and Latin America. To this end, several Latin American artists based in Brussels are also programmed. These include the great work of Brazilian artist Carolina Mendonça, well known to Beursschouwburg audiences, and the choreography of Argentinian Paula Almiron. Proximamente also collaborates with TeatroAutor.es, a program of the Instituto Cervantes which aims to promote Spanish-language creation, in particular by showcasing the work of the Latino diaspora present in Spain.

Once again, Proximamente returns to Brussels with a surprisingly up-to-date program, reflecting the liveliness of the contemporary Latin American scene. An artistic creation that invites us to draw on the past to inspire the construction of a different future.

The Proximamente festival will run from November 18 to 23 in several KVS facilities. For full program info: https://www.kvs.be/fr/pQlXvH2/proximamente-festival-2024
